Let’s Rehabilitate?: Exploring College Students’ Perceptions on Rehabilitation in the Criminal Justice System

Abstract

Rehabilitation in the criminal justice system is one of the most daunting challenges in today’s society. Recent research suggests that ninety-five percent of those who are incarcerated will recidivate and return to correctional supervision. Despite this reality, many correctional facilities do not have adequate rehabilitation programs available, which contributes to the high rates of recidivism. With that being said, research also suggest that many individuals are unaware with problems surrounding the criminal justice system. This paper explores college students’ perceptions on rehabilitation and whether these individuals are aware of the positive benefits associated with these programs. By understanding these perceptions, individuals can create a public discourse on the need for rehabilitation in the criminal justice system.
