Forensic Efficacy in Homicide Cases

Abstract

Little research has been done on what evidence aids in homicide clearance. Even less research has been done on how detectives view evidence and its relationship to case clearance. This study seeks to ascertain not only detectives’ view on forensic and non-forensic evidence but also determine if these resources aid in homicide clearance. Using data gathered from the Impact of Forensic Evidence on Arrest and Prosecution (IFEAP) research project funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ-2011-2822), over 200 homicides will be analyzed to determine whether forensic or non-forensic evidence aids in arrest. The results will then be compared to detectives' views on the usefulness of DNA, fingerprints, witness statements, suspect statements, and other forms of forensic evidence for homicide clearance.
