Determining the Likelihood of Criminal Offending: Differences Between Military and Nonmilitary Members

Abstract

Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth Child and Young Adult cohort, I compare violent outcomes of those in the military to those not in the military. Researchers have argued that military experience changes the trajectory of one’s life, whether that life change is positive or negative (Bouffard 2005; Craig and Connell 2015; Elder Jr. 1998; Rohlfs 2010; Teachman and Tedrow 2016). Using life course theory, I test to see if participation in the military influences future offending and compare this to individuals who are not and never were in the military. This project is intended to assess the understanding of patterns between military versus nonmilitary life and how life outcomes, like criminal offending, are affected.
