Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV): Effectiveness, Limitations, and Future Directions

Abstract

For the purpose of crime control, crime prevention, and/or public monitoring, many countries, such as the UK, Australia, Denmark, Spain, South Korea, and the USA, have installed CCTV (Closed-Circuit Television) in public or hot spot areas. After the installation of CCTV, researchers have studied its effectiveness by comparing crime rates before and after CCTV installation. Generally, studies show mixed results. That is, CCTV is effective in some places, but there is no or little effect in other places in terms of crime rates. In this study, the author will describe the theoretical background of CCTV and comprehensively review and critique the studies in the UK and the USA. Finally, future directions of CCTV research for helping to make a better strategy to deal with crime displacement and improving the effectiveness of CCTV will be provided.
