Identity Theft

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the crime of identity theft and to identify solutions and prevention. Using information derived from criminologists, researchers, and government data, I will construct a victim profile, examine how a person can offend, explore the losses suffered by victims, and consider the copious variations of this crime. Using the obtained information, I discovered that credit is the most common type of fraud and delved into its various forms. Among these, counterfeit cards are currently the fastest growing type of fraud, but credit card companies are issuing new types of cards and Congress is passing legislation to bring the problem to a halt. Now that online shopping and banking have become societal norms, it can be suggested that they are related to identity theft, but no empirical evidence has been conducted thus far.
