Client Centered Policing: A Focus on Positive Community Contacts

Abstract

This study explores beliefs and techniques used by a select group of front-line police officers who typically provide client centered policing in their communities without complaint or criticism. Furthermore, these officers are often complimented for their interactions by the same individuals and community.

The sample population for this study involves selected police officers from the Vancouver, BC area who work in municipal police agencies and provide operational service to the public. Each officer makes multiple contacts within their communities, are involved in complex, highly charged circumstances; and yet, for the most part do not receive complaints or criticism. This study explores personal beliefs regarding professionalism, community service, interactions with the public, and the officer’s goals regarding outcome as a possible contributor.
