While the Colombian National Police is highly recognized in the world for its successful strategies against drug trafficking cartels, the high demand of drugs in some parts of the American continent facilitate the permanent establishment of new drug trafficking organizations and more complex criminal modus operandi. This inquiry summarizes criminal investigations of Colombian law enforcement reflecting legal drug cases and demonstrates potential patterns between the illegal use of drug markets and the Darknet. Empirical studies relevant to drug trafficking trends are summarized. The study proposes an information system to support law enforcement and public health agencies to counteract technology-based crime scenarios.
