Cyberbullying Digital Practices: Exploring Cyberbullying in African-American Students

Abstract

Cyberbullying has become a major concern for parents and educators. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention considers this phenomenon a public health issue. Due to the linkages between cyberbullying, lower academic achievement, and mental health problems, scholars have worked to understand the factors associated with cyberbullying victimization and perpetration. Unfortunately, there is a limited amount of research on racial differences in cyberbullying. This study focuses on cyberbullying amongst African-American youth. Using data from the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life project, two questions are addressed: (1) what are the differences between African Americans and other racial groups with respect to cyberbullying victimization, and (2) what are the differences between African Americans and other racial groups with respect to cyberbullying perpetration?
