Addressing Victimization: An Examination of Contemporary Gender-specific, Trauma-informed Models of Intervention for Offenders

Abstract

The majority of criminal offenders report childhood victimization experiences, and evidence suggests that childhood victimization experience influences one’s risk of involvement with the criminal justice system. Trauma is experienced differently by men and women. Although trauma-informed approaches have been found to be effective, there is little information about model programming for men. More research is needed to contribute to comprehensive interventions for adult men and women at different stages in life course. This project conducts a 10 year review of relevant literature in order to understand what model interventions look like for male and female offenders at different stages in the life course. This information may be used to make recommendations for future research and programming surrounding the victim-offender overlap.
