Arson and Victimization

Abstract

Arson is a continued issue for home owners in America. It is listed as a crime against property under the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report though it can result in large financial burdens for victims. . Despite its costs, there is little data on arson victims as studies tend to focus on the perpetrator. Using the FBI’s 2015 UCR data different patterns of arson can be observed including the type. Though the data only include reported arson, they allow for examination of the relationship between the average cost of damage and the percent distribution of arson types. Results suggest that victims may require other services beside financial compensation.
