General Strain Theory and the Deviant Side of Sexting

Abstract

Previous literature has failed to evaluate what may contribute to young adults engaging in deviant forms of sexting. These behaviors include sharing sexts another individual sent them, or sending graphic and explicit photos to individuals that have not asked for it. By applying the theoretical concepts of General Strain Theory, the current study proposes a break up (hereafter end-of-relationship strain) may increase the likelihood of individuals resorting to deviant forms of sexting as form of coping and validation. The author utilizes a sample of 148 college students and evaluates their exposure to end-of-relationship strains with their corresponding deviant sexting behavior. Initial findings suggest that there may be differing influential factors between the various forms of deviant sexting. Results are discussed.
