Neighborhood Conditions on Fear of Violent and Property Crime in Five States

Abstract

Fear of crime has been a primary study area and most studies assessing fear of crime have focused on general fear of crime by using data from one city or state. In this study, we build from the line of research by focusing on both fear of violent and property crime. Using data from a random mail survey in five different states, several predictors including individual characteristics, citizens’ perceptions, and neighborhood context were examined on both fear of violent and property crime. Results reveal that the predictors of fear of violent and property crime vary. The implications of findings are also discussed.
