Systematic Review of Empirical Research on Victim Service Provision in the U.S.

Abstract

The evolution of services for crime victims began in the 1960s with the establishment of crime victim compensation programs, followed by the development of local, usually non-profit, victim service organizations in the 1970s. Given the reliance of many of these service providers on federal and state funding, there is a history of assessment available through organizations, often linked with funding reports or statewide needs assessments. However, there is a dearth of empirical peer-reviewed research focused on victim service provision from the perspective of providers. The purpose of this systematic review is to take stock of the existing empirical knowledge base on victim services and identify priorities for future research.
