Drug Addiction and the Monetization of Clients in the Criminal Justice System

Thu, Nov 16, 6:00 to 7:00pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon E, 5th Floor

Abstract

Drug addiction is bad, but drug addiction that is monitored by a doctor is ok, we are told, if it provides an overall health benefit to the patient. This poster examines that big “if” by analyzing data from interviews with more 300 drug users recruited via RDS and interviewed at a non-profit agency in the South Bronx by John Jay College students. The analysis of the data will focus on the degree to which clients are monetized: provided with health care services far more than their peers in the neighborhood, have multiple memberships with intersecting governmental and non-governmental agencies, and criminal justice experiences that keep them attached to the system. The monetization of clients in the system has attracted a new cadre of non-profit business into neighborhoods that were one bereft of services.
