Gun Violence Trends in New York City Neighborhood: 2012-2017

Thu, Nov 16, 6:00 to 7:00pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon E, 5th Floor

Abstract

Correlations between gun violence and drugs have been examined in different contexts; from the crack epidemics in New York City’s neighborhoods in the 1980s, to the militarized responses brought on by the US engineered War on Drugs, both nationally and on a global level. Building on these perspectives, this study examines the effect that the most recent epidemic of heroin and prescription opiates has had on interpersonal, intergenerational and state violence. The data presented in this poster illustrates gun associations between drugs and violence in NYC neighborhoods, and is compiled from approximately 20,000 surveys and 5,000 in-depth interviews conducted by students from John Jay College of Criminal Justice between 2012 and 2017.
