The research conducted 4-wave postal surveys on representative sample of inhabitants in 90 census tracts in a city in Tokyo metropolitan area, then integrated them with official crime statistics and census data, using census tract as unit of analysis.
Negative binominal regression analysis revealed that collective efficacy increases level of neighborhood crime prevention efforts and then reduces residential burglary, after controlling neighborhood socio-economic factors. Among two sub-factors of collective efficacy, social cohesion is found to increase surveillance and shared expectations to informal social control actions is found to increase household-level crime prevention behavior. Meanwhile, density of personal network among inhabitants are not significantly related to crime-level, suggesting that neighborhood crime prevention efforts should foster mutual trust and crime prevention behavior among inhabitants
