With the increase in incarceration that has occurred in the US over the last few decades, how the criminal justice system handles growing specialty populations has become an important, though understudied, area of criminal justice research. This study takes an in depth look at maternity care within jails and prisons across the US and examines policies for pregnant inmates as well as policies facing incarcerated female offenders who have recently given birth.
