Environmental Scan Concerning Services Combatting Human Trafficking and Sources Pertaining to South Central Pennsylvania

Abstract

Students in Stepanka Magstadt’s Global Human Trafficking Global Problem Local Solution Class conducted an environmental scan during the spring of 2017. This scan is comprehensive of agencies in South Central Pennsylvania assisting survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. First, students observed an organization’s mission statement, services, clients assisted, contact information, history, and members. While this list is not comprehensive, it serves as an example of areas addressed. The second part of the environmental scan evaluated local and national newspapers, research organizations, population data, journal articles, conferences, court records, law enforcement, and the regional characteristics. The New York Times, for example, discusses how students with J-1 visas in Hershey, Pennsylvania were paid below the minimum wage after their fees were waged. This poster, while inclusive of all areas listed above, will include information on what traffickers are looking for when bringing their victims to an area, and what the region of South Central Pennsylvania has to offer. Many regional agencies have explained the novelty of this environmental scan and how it is a great resource to best provide services to survivors. This snapshot of the environmental scan can show other regions best practices when conducting environmental scans concerning human trafficking.
