Roundtable: Returning to the Faculty After Life in Administration: The Benefits and Challenges

Sat, Nov 18, 8:00 to 9:20am, Marriott, Conference Suite II, 3rd Floor

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Most faculty members who move into administrative positions find the transition to be more difficult than expected. In the presenters' experience, transitioning back to the faculty after having served as an administrator similarly poses some unexpected challenges, including navigating changes in relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators; adjusting to changes in the pace of work; readapting to increased teaching loads; reengaging in one’s scholarly research; accepting decreased access to resources; allowing one's replacement to find his or her own path; and learning to live with a newfound decrease in one’s ability to fix problems. The presenters will share their tips for navigating these challenges.
