Session Submission Summary

Somali Immigrants and Refugees: Societal Treatment and Youth Behavior

Wed, Nov 15, 8:00 to 9:20am, Marriott, Franklin 12, 4th Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

This panel presents results from a longitudinal, multi-method, inter-disciplinary project on Somali immigrants and refugees. The project examines questions related to radicalization and violent extremism within a general mental health and resilience framework. One of the foci of the project is to integrate insights from criminology with those of public health, sociology, trauma studies and psychology in order to better understand the processes involved in radicalization and violent extremism among young people. There will be five papers. The first paper will present the Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach, which emphasizes the role of research in service of the Somali community. Against this backdrop, the 4 additional papers will present substantive findings drawing from, respectively, gang and radicalization literature, criminological theory, writings on police-citizen interactions, as well as mental health. As such, the panel hopes to show how a truly interdisciplinary, multi-method approach increases our understanding of the pressing issue of radicalization among youth. However, perhaps most importantly, we hope to illustrate the power of a truly Community-Based Participatory Research when studying a vulnerable population in an ethically responsible manner.
