Research on the near repeat phenomenon has documented the existence of spatiotemporal patterns across various crimes ranging from burglary to maritime piracy. The current thematic panel builds on the extant literature with projects that explore the implications of geocoding accuracy for the identification of spatiotemporal crime patterns, the degree to which spatiotemporal patterns for various crimes cluster in certain communities, the role situational context and the environmental backcloth play in fostering repeat/near repeat crime patterns, and the conditional nature of near repeat crime patterns as it relates to both community characteristics and aggregated neighborhood risk of crime (ANROC). Implications of these studies for crime prevention efforts and criminological theories of repeat/near repeat victimization are discussed.
