Session Submission Summary

Police Contact and School- and Community-Based Court Referrals for Juvenile First-Time Offenders

Thu, Nov 16, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Marriott, Franklin 5, 4th Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

There remains a need to understand the impact police contact and court referrals have on juvenile first-time offenders. This panel explores this topic through four presentations. First, the contextual and individual-level predictors of receiving a civil citation will be presented. Second, we will focus on the impacts of a school-based delinquency prevention program. Third, we will discuss how court sanctions differ for youth referred from schools versus from the community. Finally, we will compare the labeling and deterrent effects of school referrals to the juvenile court and community referrals to the juvenile court.
