Policy Panel: Latina/o Criminology in the Age of Trump

Abstract

With the new president's disregard of social science and pledge to fulfill numerous campaign promises that would be detrimental to the U.S. Latina/o population, it has become essential for criminologists to rethink the relationship between social science and policy. This panel, comprised of academics and non-academics who specialize in criminal justice issues pertaining to Latinos, will discuss ways for Latina/o criminology to move forward in the current political climate. The discussion will include, but not be limited to: What kinds of research questions should scholars ask? What outlets should we disseminate research? How do we pursue alternative sources of grant funding? The goal of the panel will be to begin a conversation amongst advanced and early career academics, as well as graduate students, for the purposes of ensuring that a Latina/o Criminology can adapt to the needs of Latino communities in the new political environment.
