Roundtable: Research Prospects in India: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

With increasing interest in criminology and criminal justice in the Indian context, many scholars (national and international) have presented their research at various conferences leading to several collaborative publications. However, there still remain challenges to conducting research in India. In this context, scholars of Indian origin have realized the need to create a streamlined method to address these difficulties and to develop opportunities for research. This round table seeks to build on past scholarship, and determine ways to foster greater collaboration among scholars interested in India and other South Asian countries. This founding group seeks to establish a structure to enable collaborative criminological scholarship to examine social issues and problems of this region. This group will seek input, support and membership from the broader ASC members at this inaugural meeting. It will also seek to adopt a constitution, assign functionaries and determine the broad goals of the proposed group. The primary goal of the new organization is to bring together researchers, practitioners, academics, policy-makers and others actively engaged in India-related research and teaching on issues of crime and justice.
