Navigating Risky Spaces: Tacit Knowledge in the Neighborhood, Prison, on the Beat and Online

Abstract

This panel examines how certain populations navigate risky spaces through the use of tacit knowledge or cognitive shorthands. Focusing on four realms — the neighborhood, the prison, the police service, and social media — we examine how individuals draw on environmental stimuli in order to enhance their ability to identify wrongdoers and avoid victimization. Through a variety of qualitative approaches including ethnography and in-depth interviews, each paper offers insight into the heuristic devices used by groups operating under uncertainty — be it on the job or in everyday life.
