Session Submission Summary

Authoritative Control and Collective Action in State Complexes

Wed, Nov 15, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Marriott, Franklin 3, 4th Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

Institutions are the sites for a number of gender and racial violence. As such, it is important to study their mechanisms of control and identify their mechanisms of control and areas for intervention and resistance. This session will look at three particular institutions: the carceral state, military industrial complex, and sexual assault response systems. The prison rebellions of 2016 and 2017 are explored as an important site of social change and collective action. Bureaucratic harassment is considered as a mechanism of harm in the military industrial complex. Finally, the institutions involved in sexual assault response are critically evaluated for their role in perpetuating sexual violence and carceral solutions.
