Substance Abuse, Violent Female Offenders, and Antisocial Personality Disorder in Abused and Neglected Children Followed Up into Adulthood

Abstract

These three papers use data from an ongoing prospective longitudinal study of the long-term consequences of child abuse and neglect. Each presentation deals with a different issue, crossing disciplinary fields and topics. Horan and Widom examine the extent to which substance abuse is associated with crime, incarceration, and early mortality and the extent to which child maltreatment has an independent impact over the lifespan. Taking a very different perspective, Trauffer and Widom look at whether child maltreatment increases a women’s risk for engaging in violent crime and, if so, whether particular psychiatric disorders are involved in explaining that relationship. Finally, Phenix and Widom undertake to examine whether race plays a role in the criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) and whether the association between child maltreatment and ASPD may be in part a function of a subset of items in the criteria for ASPD.
