Roundtable: Examining Non-Custodial Suicide

Abstract

In 2013, the death of Aaron Swartz – the young founder of Reddit, put a name and face to the phenomenon of suicide by a person under criminal investigation or indictment, not in custody. While the statistics of suicide during incarceration in prison and jail are supported by a large body of work, the literature on non-custodial suicide by those free on bail, pretrial release, or own recognizance is virtually silent. This round table will discuss this phenomenon and its ramifications.
