Abstract

In recent decades it is clear that the number of parents imprisoned is increasing on a global scale, and the vast majority of these prisoners are men. Yet little formal attention has been paid to the parenting status of these men, despite knowledge about the impact of parental incarceration on children being well established. This panel will present four diverse papers, drawing on research from Australia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, to examine: imprisoned fathers experiences of arrest, detained fathers subjective experience of severity of imprisonment, the impact of imprisoning Fathers of the First Peoples of Australia, and young men’s experiences of parenting within prison ten years on.
