Session Submission Summary

Analyzing National-Incident Based Reporting System Data: Approaches, Best Practices, and Examples

Wed, Nov 15, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marriott, Franklin 1, 4th Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced that the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program’s Summary Reporting System will be retired by January 1, 2021. After this date, the UCR Program will only be accepting National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data for a UCR submission. Using NIBRS data can be challenging for researchers new to the data due to its complexity. Staff from the FBI and the Bureau of Justice Statistics will provide attendees with an overview of the NIBRS data collection, data linkages and units of count, as well as examples of analyses and best practices.
