Session Submission Summary

Gender and Experiences of Incarceration and Reentry

Thu, Nov 16, 5:00 to 6:20pm, Marriott, Franklin 11, 4th Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

The panel will include four presentations. The first presentation will focus on maternal incarceration, including incarcerated mothers’ relationships with caregivers and their children, their views about being a mother, and thoughts about leaving prison and returning to their communities. This presentation also explores the influence of motherhood on women’s reentry experiences. The remaining presentations will focus on the ongoing mixed-methods evaluation of a prisoner reentry program for men that included therapy, resource-knowledge, and education components. While quantitative evaluation data reveal the impact on recidivism rates, qualitative evaluation results reveal the gendered nature of program experiences, including the program site as sanctuary from the hyper-masculinity men described in other prison settings.
