Psychological Consequences of Correctional Systems Involvement

Abstract

This panel offers insight into the collateral consequences faced by individuals involved within the criminal justice system. Specifically, this panel will discuss the interpersonal relationships, mental health, and substance misuse of individuals currently involved in the United States correctional system. The presentations will address key questions about (a) the mental health of currently incarcerated prisoners; (b) the substance use and intimate partner relationships of probationers; and (c) the interpersonal relationships among sexual offender currently under community supervision. The panel brings together several research teams presenting their latest research and empirical findings using sophisticated research methods and analyses (e.g., longitudinal data, multi-level modeling) and features a discussant who is a practitioner. Implications for current correctional practices and policies are outlined and suggestions for future research are provided.
