Policy Panel: The Future of Preventing College Sexual Assault

Fri, Nov 17, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Marriott, Grand Ballroom Salon A, 5th Floor

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

A changed political reality in Washington marks the opening of a new chapter in the effort to prevent sexual assault on American campuses. In the recent past, federal efforts such as the Clery Act and the enforcement of Title IX joined local and state criminal justice systems and university regulatory efforts in responding to sexual assault. But policy and legal changes may lead to new challenges. Key participants shaping that future include public policy makers at the federal and state level; the safety and security departments at colleges and universities; reform organizations seeking to improve campus safety; students and those who work directly with them; and criminologists who seek to measure and explain crime. This panel asks representatives of each of these groups to assess what has been learned over the past decade and what will be critical in shaping that future.
