Roundtable: Communities That Care (CTC): An Effective and Efficient Crime Prevention Model

Abstract

In the last three decades, many community-wide prevention science models have been tested and proven. This notion of prevention science was borrowed from the field of medicine and public health which seek to prevent health problems before they occur. Communities that Care (CTC) is a crime prevention system that reduces population level risk factors while also increasing protective factors. CTC helps communities to prevent crime, delinquency, and youth problems before they start. The Communities That Care (CTC) has been rigorously tested using the randomized control trial (RCT). Results show that CTC is both effective and efficient for reducing and preventing delinquency and crime rates. This panel will discuss the policy and research implications of the CTC-Model for the ASC members and policy makers. A particular concern for Prevention Scientists is how to unleash the power of prevention in the communities where the ASC members live. After decades of silence, the ASC now has the capacity to either support or suppress CTC. This panel will explore the specific teaching, research, and service resources that ASC can use to support existing crime prevention science projects.
