Roundtable: Empirical Research on Capital Punishment in China: Challenges and Opportunities

Sat, Nov 18, 8:00 to 9:20am, Marriott, Conference Suite I, 3rd Floor

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Scholars who study capital punishment in China labor in an inhospitable research environment of state-imposed scarcity in which official data is partial, sporadic and suspect. Meanwhile, contemporary Chinese society is increasingly open, geographically accessible and digitally connected, presenting researchers with a host of new and unexplored data sources. What are the methodological challenges to death penalty scholarship in this research environment? What are the most promising opportunities to advance empirical scholarship on the death penalty in China? Participants in this roundtable will share their research experiences and consider avenues for future investigation.
