Abstract

Twitter as a form of social media provides researchers with a unique opportunity to study public opinion and experiences with crime. This roundtable will discuss the benefits and challenges of downloading, coding and analyzing Twitter data generally. Roundtable participants will also discuss the use of Twitter data across several research endeavors involving: (1) the social reaction to child abduction and Amber Alerts; (2) the nature and extent of sexual assault disclosures and social reactions to these disclosures (#notokay) and (3) the social reactions to the actions of United Airlines and law enforcement involving the forceful removal of Dr. David Dao.
