Roundtable: Inside-Out Programming: Transcending the Walls

Wed, Nov 15, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marriott, Room 301, 3rd Floor

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

A roundtable of Inside-Out instructors and students will discuss how a semester-long course, which brings together incarcerated ‘inside’ and campus-based ‘outside’ students behind the walls of a correctional facility, is often a site for transformational education. With an innovative pedagogical approach tailored to effectively facilitate dialogue across difference, Inside-Out courses foster active and deep engagement with social justice issues. Possible areas of discussion include Unexpected Emotional Reactions; Victims, Victimization and Restorative Justice; Bringing “Academic/Book Learning” to Life; Collaborative Learning and the Group Project; and Critical Considerations of Privilege and Power.
