Researchers have long theorized the challenges and benefits of women in policing, particularly in relation to police use of force. Yet, systematic empirical examinations of gender and use of force is surprisingly limited. Using data collected as part of a national use of force project (the Assessing Police Use of Force Policy and Outcomes study), we examine the extent do male and female officers use force similarly or dis-similarly, and what factors may account for such.
