Gender Identity as a Moderator of Sexual Assault Risk for College Students Who Drink Alcohol

Abstract

Decades of research has provided evidence that female college students experience higher rates of sexual assault victimization compared to their male counterparts. However, little is known about the sexual assault victimization experiences and related risk factors of those who identify as transgender. Using data from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment-II (N=53,373), this study will examine the relationship between binge- and social-drinking, gender identity and sexual assault. Findings from this study will help fill the gap in the research and contribute to the growing body of knowledge on transgender students’ sexual assault victimization experiences. The results will have several implications for future research on violence against the transgender community and can be used to inform more inclusive public policy and prevention efforts.
