The Urban Institute, with funding from the National Institute of Justice, is examining the role of the sexual assault medical forensic exam (SAMFE) in investigative and prosecutorial outcomes. As part of this project, research partners in two sites in a northeastern state coded over 400 sexual assault cases for case, forensic, victim, and suspect characteristics. We will discuss whether and how the presence of the SAMFE, medical examination components, other forensic evidence components, and other case characteristics (including victim and suspect characteristics) affect investigative and prosecutorial case outcomes. Findings will inform the dearth of knowledge about the extent to which medical forensic exams lead to case outcomes such as arrest, charges, and conviction.
