This project uses multilevel logistic regression techniques to examine the contextual effects of education on risk of intimate partner abuse (IPA) for women in six countries in the Global South. Each country is compared to another that shares its historical and cultural roots but differs in terms of human development, and then again to another country similar only in ranking on the UN Human Development Index (HDI). Data on selected countries (Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Moldova, Nepal, and the Ukraine) comes from the domestic violence module of the Demographic and Health Surveys Program. The analysis is structured by an ecological framework of abuse, and education is measured at three nested levels: individual, interpersonal, and community. Results are discussed in the context of interventions, with attention to culturally-specific interventions and associated complications.
