In Event: Serial Killers on the Big Screen and Close to Home: Myths, Motives, and Spatial Typologies
This study examines fame-seeking mass shootings in the United States from 1966 to 2017. Fame-seeking perpetrators refer to a recent characterization of mass shooters that succumb to delusions of grandeur and seek notoriety through killing. This research identifies changes in incidents and rates of victimization over time. In addition to this, comparisons are made between fame-seeking perpetrator / incident characteristics and the rest of the mass shooting phenomenon. Finally, an examination of media coverage determines if media outlets are contributing to the social problem. A discussion of findings will highlight implications for scholars, media outlets, and the general public.
