Over the past decade, the criminal justice system has re-evaluated the way prostitutes are thought of and processed through the criminal justice system. These individuals are either considered criminals or victims. Their initial label by the justice system can have an effect on how they view themselves moving forward. Current research on prostitution mainly focuses on health risk, substance abuse, mental health issues, and trauma/victimization. However, these studies fail to focus on identity and other services that are essential for a successful exit from prostitution. Exiting a life of prostitution should be examined in a holistic manner, meaning that their opinion toward their identity and needs are taken into account. This paper examines what programs are currently available for women who are trying to exit a life of prostitution and what adjustments these programs should make in order to account for identity issues and other needs that will help them exit a life of prostitution.
