Headstart in the United States dates back to 1965 as a way to educate disadvantaged preschool-aged children. Numerous studies have shown the effectiveness of such programs to help with child development, reduced impulsivity, obesity, and educational attainment. These programs also show long-term results that may reduce adult criminality. Recent budget shortfalls have started to question the future of Headstart. This research focuses on the necessity of Headstart and programs like it to maintain improved child development and low levels of criminality. Specific policy implications and future research needs will be discussed.
