Results from the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS)

Thu, Nov 15, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Marriott, A705, Atrium Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

The thematic panel will discuss findings on several topics using the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS) data. NISVS is a random digit dial dual frame (landline and cell phone) telephone survey that collects information regarding experiences that have occurred across the lifespan and within the previous 12 months. The data are from both women’s and men’s experiences with all forms of victimization including physical, intimate, and sexual violence, stalking, psychological aggression and coercive control. The following topics will be discussed: intimate partner violence experienced by lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals; effects of physical violence, psychological aggression, and coercive control on physical and mental health; the effects of formal and informal disclosure on health outcomes among sexual assault victims; and item response theory analysis. Results from these studies can be used to raise awareness and increase understanding to inform policies and practices.
