Empirical Research on Civil, Criminal, and Family Court Practices Involving Intimate Partner Violence and Child Maltreatment Cases

Thu, Nov 15, 9:30 to 10:50am, Marriott, M301, Marquis Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract

This thematic panel will discuss empirical findings from three NIJ funded studies that examine civil, criminal, or family court practices involving domestic violence, intimate partner violence (IPV) and/or child maltreatment or custody cases. The first presentation will feature results from a study of court-referred cases that received court-based resolution, shuttle mediation, or videoconferencing mediation. The second presentation will highlight outcomes in custody/abuse litigation in child custody and non-alienation abuse cases. The third presentation will highlight findings from an in-depth analysis of protection order filings and victim decision-making and the impacts of institutional and contextual factors associated with filing patterns and case outcomes. All of these studies discuss results in the context of improving access to justice. Results from these studies can be used to raise awareness and increase understanding to inform policies and practices.
