Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
This thematic panel brings together scholars interested in answering the call put forward by leading rural criminologists to address the dearth of fruitful theoretical work concerning issues of crime and justice in rural settings. Much of the previous rural scholarship perpetuates a dualistic fallacy by viewing rural settings as idyllic, crime free regions until some disruption upsets their pastoral existence, resulting in something akin to “the new wild west”. Theoretical works on this panel go beyond this one-dimensional approach, and explore issues of context and cultural arrangements to construct deeper theoretical accounts around issues of crime and justice in various rural settings.
