Secondary Trauma in Title IX/Equity Spaces

Abstract

Many are familiar with Title IX and Equity offices mostly through the sometimes shocking allegations and resulting sanctions that come from these space. What receives far less attention is the secondary trauma encountered by all in this space. In this presentation, we discuss secondary trauma experienced by complainants, respondents, witnesses and professionals in the office. We describe this trauma, and ways to ameliorate it. Finally, we discuss why care and self-care are critically important, what that care can look like, and suggestions for improvements in the future. Information for this presentation stems from interviews with people engaged in these spaces.
