Stimulated by new licit and illicit data set markets and the potential for its further usage, the theft of big data is increasing exponentially as a modern cybercrime. After being processed using basic data analytics to improve its quality and then sold on to other criminals to use in their crimes, big (victim) data sets cause a massive increase in the scalability and asymmetry of many different types of fraudulent and deceptive economic cybercrimes. Research into new data crimes is helping to identify where in the cybercrime ecosystem law enforcement can target resources to effectively reduce the sources of victim information to prevent them escalating into further crimes.
