Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
This session outlines an approach to teaching controversial topics as objects of academic investigation and analysis, but also the role of faculty, staff, and administrators in responding to victim disclosures. The session will explore how to balance goals of critical thinking and academic discourse with teaching tolerance and a sense of social responsibility. We also provide a set of strategies for faculty to provide an intellectually stimulating learning environment while protecting students’ privacy and safety and responding to disclosures, and address the impact of this campus work for experiences of secondary trauma.
